A NEW CHAPTER: ERIKA'S JOURNEY

As I sit at my desk, the soft glow of the computer screen illuminating my workspace, I can’t help but reflect on the journey that brought me here. My name is Erika Loise Gulane-Lanticse, and if someone had told me years ago that I would find my calling in the digital world, I would have laughed in disbelief.

My academic life was dedicated to English, a language that always fascinated me. The intricacies of its grammar, the beauty of its prose, and the depth of its poetry captivated my heart and mind. I pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education majoring in English, envisioning myself standing in front of a classroom, igniting the same passion for language in my students.

But life, as always, had different plans.

After graduation, I found myself steering away from the educational path and instead, entering the bustling world of Business Process Outsourcing (BPO). The shift was significant, but I embraced it with open arms. The BPO industry was dynamic and challenging, offering a different perspective and a new set of skills to master. I started as an agent, diving headfirst into the complexities of customer service and corporate dynamics.

With time and determination, I climbed the ranks to become a Team Manager. It was a role that tested and honed my leadership skills, demanding both patience and strategic thinking. The job was demanding, often encroaching on my personal time, but it was also rewarding. I learned about people management, effective communication, and the intricacies of business operations.

However, another significant chapter of my life was unfolding simultaneously – my personal life. I got married and was blessed with two beautiful children. Balancing a demanding job and family life became increasingly challenging. I often found myself torn between my professional responsibilities and my desire to be there for every milestone, every laugh, and every tear of my children.

The decision to shift careers wasn’t easy, but it was necessary. I chose to step into the world of freelancing. This move wasn’t just a career change; it was a lifestyle change. Freelancing offered me the flexibility I craved, allowing me to be more present for my husband and children. It was the best decision I made for my career and family.

Now, as a freelancer, I have ventured into the realms of SEO, digital marketing, and graphic design. These fields, once foreign to me, are now areas where I am actively honing my skills. The learning curve is steep, but exhilarating. Every project is a new challenge, every client a new opportunity to grow and prove my capabilities.

The transition from an English major to a BPO professional, and now to a freelancer specializing in digital skills, has been nothing short of remarkable. It speaks to the unpredictable nature of life and the endless possibilities that come with each decision we make.

As I continue to work from my home, I am reminded of the incredible journey that has led me here. I am grateful for each experience, as they have shaped me into the professional and individual I am today. More importantly, I am grateful for the balance I have found, allowing me to nurture my career aspirations while being there for my family.

This is not just a career story; it’s a life story. One where passion, adaptability, and family intertwine to create a narrative that is uniquely mine
